PARENT TEACHER
ASSOCIATIONS & ORGANIZATIONS
What is a PTA, PTSA & PTO?
All three of these organizations are a great way for parents to get involved with the school. These groups allow parents and teachers to work together to create a good learning environment for our kids. While the three organization models are similar in nature, there are a few slight differences to be aware of. Your child’s school will have one of these organizations.
PTA (Parent Teacher Association) - is part of the National PTA and exists as a chapter. The National PTA is a non-profit group that charges dues and holds lobbying power in Washington, DC. PTAs must adhere to the National PTA adopted standards and positions.
PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) - is the same as a normal PTA, but has included “students” into the association to recognize their importance. PTSAs often have student board positions or other key roles allowing students to get involved.
PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) -is not part of the National PTA and operates independently of the rules and restrictions set by them. PTOs may be registered as non-profits, but can have different policies than the National PTA.
