The School Board
What is a school board and what does it do?
School board directors are locally elected public officials entrusted with governing a community's public schools. The role of the school board is to ensure that school districts are responsive to the values, beliefs, and priorities of their communities. They are representatives of the community who set the vision, mission, and strategic goals for the district. They also review, revise, and adopt policies. Most importantly, they hire, supervise, and evaluate the superintendent.
The superintendent serves as the chief executive officer of the school system. He or she is responsible for the management of the schools, the administration of all school board policies, and is directly accountable to the school board.
“School boards have broad discretionary power and FINAL responsibility for making rules for the district they represent…The power lies with the people [parents].” So when people say school boards can't do anything about the governor's mandates, they're wrong according to the law.”
— Rep. Jim Walsh
School Board Meetings
Attending school board meetings is one of the best ways you can make a difference in the district as the school board answers to the people.
While simply showing up to board meetings is important, actively advocating for your children has the greatest impact. We recommend you review our School Board Rules of Engagement if you wish to voice your concerns directly to the board. Knowing the proper protocols will ensure your statements are delivered with maximum effectiveness.
The school board meeting schedule may be found on our calendar or on the TSD Website.

The school board often works with the Maple Valley City Council. Did you know that the Mayor of Maple Valley (Sean P. Kelly) also works for the Tahoma School District as the Supervisor of Operations? He reports to the Director of Operations, then to Tony Davis the Assistant Superintendent.
Tahoma School District Map
Local election rules state that each school board member must live within the specific district that they represent. All school board elections are voted on by the registered voters living within the entire Tahoma School District which is a combination of all five individual districts.
