Sexually Explicit Graphic Novel Discovered in Tahoma HS Library

A recent tip sent to us by upset parents shows a wildly inappropriate “LGBTQ+” graphic novel on display at the THS library. While displays included other controversial novels, “Flamer” appears to be the main cause of concern.

WARNING: The images and text shown throughout this article may be considered highly inappropriate. Reader discretion is advised.

Flamer is a semi-autobiographical story about a boy named Aiden coming to terms with his sexuality and identity. Throughout the book Aiden is bullied, confused about his attraction to the same-sex, and struggles to fit in. At one point he even contemplates suicide. Like many modern tales, there is a sad darkness in this story. Where the book crosses the “school-appropriate” line however, is through the depictions of sexual acts and highly vulgar statements.

Most notable is a scene where the boys in Aiden’s scout troop are masturbating together into a bottle. One of the boy’s claims, “…if you don’t cum you have to drink it.” Many parents would not consider this content appropriate for the educational environment.

It was also noted that this book was not listed on the approved rainbow book list sent out by the district in April of this year.

Concerned parents are encouraged to contact district leadership to voice their concerns. A request for reconsideration may also be submitted to remove the book for violations of Policy 2021 4.b.iv (books must contain appropriate subject matter) and 7.e (perpetuates sexual stereotypes). Legal contact should be made if parents believe RCW 9.68A.050 (Dealing in depictions of minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct) has been violated.

The integrity of educators who expose kids to highly sexualized content without parental awareness and consent should be brought into question. This is not acceptable!
